I’ve already spent a long time and a lot of ink and photo paper trying to get my Deskjet 5150 to produce photos under Ubuntu as beautiful as the ones it used to produce under Windows. So here’s my revenge: A fully documented method of producing half-decent photo prints with the HP Deskjet 5150 using Ubuntu Linux, for beginners:
Before you start, you need to install your Deskjet 5150, using the hpijs driver, and install Picasa from Google. This is documented elsewhere online, so I won’t cover it here, unless any asks for it. I was using HP Premium Photo Paper, 10x15cm.
Then follow these steps to prepare your printer for photo printing:
(You may wish to write down the previous settings if you wish to set your printer back later)
Then to print a photo:
However, I have run across several problems even after following the above steps. I’ll try and update this post with soloutions if I find any.

The Swiss army is not renowned for its aggressive expeditionary adventures – but it does appear to have accidentally invaded Liechtenstein.

Two years ago this very blog reported on “Robot lawyers set for trial against humans“.
Now the creator of a very similar looking system has been charged with “practicing law without a license”.
As a commentor on the wired blog notes; this conclusion is only valid while the creator of the program can be easily blamed for its operation. Arguably, the creator of the software did not practice law in this case – he only made it possible for a computer to ‘practice law’. This kind of thing it going to become a lot more common as services are increasingly provided by computerised systems; and one a day a crime like this will be commited without an obvious culprit. I wouldn’t like to be the judge or jury on that one.
