An advert in Autotrader is expensive. It’s also good value for money.
Unlike the thieving scum that call everyone who advertises their car on Autotrader. The scam is simple. They tell you have buyers for your car, guaranteed to get you full asking price within 1-2 weeks. And then ask you for £80. The ones that have called me so far today are Vehicle Match (crooks) and Motorsearch UK (thieves).
You can read the full story on these scams here: Mirror.co.uk – News – Mirror Investigates. There are many more scammers using the same trick.
Autotrader are alright, although they should sue these parasites. It cost me £36 to advertise my car for 2 weeks on the site, one week in the mag, and one week in a freebie mag they give out at supermarkets. It’s getting calls from real people although the car has not yet sold.

An interesting accident happened to me today. I accidentally copied the url of the main browser control instead of the link I was after (I was in the search box, and my 1.5.0.2 on redhat has an odd issue with giving me two right-click menus at once).
This is the URL: chrome://browser/content/browser.xul (copy and paste it – doesn’t seem to always work clicking on it)
This poked at my curiosity, so I thought I’d see how far I could take it.
Opening the browser control in a new tab gives you a nested browser within it. With an address bar. And so on, ad infinitum – or more accurately, just a few times until your firefox chews it’s way through all the available resource and falls over in a heap.
Given the interest caused by the recent furiousfirefoxtabs ‘how many tabs can you open’ contest, I thought it might be an interest contest to see if any can beat my record of 6. It’s not as easy as it looks!
If you can do more than 6, just take a screenshot, upload to flickr, and tag it ‘furiousfirefoxfirefox‘

New interface developed by scientists allows information to be fed directly to the tongue. They are hoping this will allow limited vision for the blind, extra senses for soldiers (like sonar or GPS for example), and, soon available commercially, restored balance for people with damage to the inner ear.

I’m not impressed with portland.co.uk.
They’ve been handling my domain registration for thedruid.co.uk for around 8 years now, since they used to do good free hosting. I moved when I outgrew their free hosting, but allowed them to renew my domain for me.
It came up for renewal recently, and they let it go without any kind of email contact or anything – just let it expire. I discovered it when I was unable to connect to my site – but I guess the site may have been unavailable for nearly a day without me knowing. Just hope Google wasn’t crawling then.
To ad insult to injury, the renewal price is collasal – £36 for two years, around 6 times more expensive than a lot of registrars.
And finally, virtually everything on their site seems to be be down: faq; contact page; portal; forums; – so no way of contacting them except via email, which, from experience years ago, they never read (and my incoming email is down too since the domain expired!)
So I had no way to transfer the domain to a sensibly priced registrar, and I had to shell out the huge fee. Rest assured it won’t be remaining there! I’ve learnt my lesson, and no cowboy outfit will be handling my domain registrations now.
