I took a while, but I found a theme which I am slightly happier with. I needed to do a few hacks to it before I was happy with it. I have added a ‘Theme Switcher’ plugin, so if you don’t agree, feel free to view using the old theme. I have also installed the excellent ‘Now Reading’ plugin.

Firefox has a major new achievement: The elite open source browser is now shipping as the default browser on new Dell desktops and laptops. This is a major snub to Microsoft’s IE. A huge OEM are going well out of their way to proclaim their belief that Firefox is easier to support and provides a better overall computer experience. I would estimate that IE7 has to make a successful shipment in under a year unless it wants to slip to second place.

I’m geeky enough to enjoy this blog by the staff at F-Secure (a prominant anti-virus software house). They’ve posted a nice picture of their offices in Helsinki, and they look pretty cool!

Just trying Google’s ‘Blogger Web Comments for Firefox‘. Seems to work well. Can’t help wondering if it might be easier done with a userscript rather than extension, but I suppose not everyone has GreaseMonkey.

Gmail have been busy again. You can now officially get your gmail fix on your phone!
And they’ve added two more new features:
Vacation Responses
Contact Groups
I’ve quickly tried out the new Gmail Mobile service and it works pretty well, given the inbuilt limits of the phone. I have a newish Sony-Ericsson K750i on the UK ‘o2′ network. Logging on is a bit fiddly – important to remember you must enter your full email address, unlike logging onto the full gmail web client. If you just get something wrong, you have to retype your password which is a pain using the phone’s interface if you have a decent strength password. Once you’re in, it remembers your password and the layout is fairly intuitive if a bit more cumbersome than the slick web interface. Still just having features like this is good, and it underlines Google’s policy for Gmail – it’s a webmail client for people who really use email, not a client for advertisers like hotmail/yahoo.
I too sent an email to the now infamous Moneygrabbing Shysters who are collecting ad money from a site proposing to sue Wikipedia. I think Jimbo Wales would be in a position to sue them more than vice versa. This is what I sent anyway:
Dear Sir,
I am writing about your website (‘http://www.wikipediaclassaction.org/’)
and your proposed lawsuit. I would like to respectfully request you
remove your website. I believe you are attempting to acquire traffic
for your website (and therefore earn money from advertising) by
attacking a valuable internet resource. This is extremely unethical. In
addition, I am sure you are aware that any lawsuit would be unlikely to
suceed, based as it is on a flawed understanding of the internet.
Yours Faithfully,
(I added my name here)

Tai Shan, the new Giant Panda cub at Washington’s Smithsonian National Zoological Park had his first visitors yesterday. Lucky members of the public who got tickets to a special viewing session got to see the baby panda for 10 mins.

Gmail has had virus scanning for a few days now, but the ‘What’s New’ page has now been updated to inlude RSS feed previews, HTML previews of MS Office and OpenOffice attachments, sidebar links to addresses or tracking info from your mail. These features don’t seem to have gone live yet. No date on the page either – see the info here:

UPDATE: RSS Feeds and HTML previews are now active.
I was highly amused by the entry in excellent History Timeline for the year 193 AD. It states simply:
193 .Emperor Commodus is a disappointment. Commodus is assassinated.
